Observation in SMU GAMA Yogyakarta (21-22 May, 2008)

DAY 1

It was Wednesday morning at 8.20 when I entered the school gate after jumped from the bus. Actually, I had an appointment with my group for that day was “observation day” for us. I met them inside the hall, Varo and Betty, while another group, Linda and Kanya, were ready too.

To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect inside there. Then, we met the teachers. SMU GAMA only has two English teachers, Miss Ria (alumnus of PBI Sanata Dharma 2001) and Miss Tri (alumnus of Ahmad Dahlan University). It had been said that SMU GAMA used to had five English teachers, but the “survivor” was only two. The rest were fled away. I wondered why.

Our group had Miss Ria’s class, in Grade X class C.

We followed her. She is tall and slim. She has a good complexion, sweet and nice. She has Jakarta accent, I presumed, for she always said, “Lu” for “kamu” (you), “gua” for “aku”(me), and Jakarta dialect.

We sat in the back row. I was surprised. The class was nearly empty. There were only 13 students, 4 boys and 9 girls. I stared to the “absent board”. It should be 14 boys and 10 girls!

So, where were the others?

I observed the class thoroughly.

I took a note, a lot, in my notebook.

Here they are:

1. Students’ characteristics:

· Noisy

· Naughty

· Chaos and crowded, like a market J

· Apathy (lack of concern and interest)

· I assumed, they came from various family background

· Some girls were very quite and passive

· All the boys were “big mouth”, they liked to shout and yell

· Some girls were sissy and talkative, precisely, very talkative

2. Teacher’s competence:

· General Teaching Skills

- Material mastery

Ms. Ria was good. She told the students about structure: How to Change Passive Voice into Active Voice. She mastered it well, I suppose.

- Classroom management

But the situation somehow was out of control. She had to speak louder and assertive. I noticed that most of them were still confused, even to differentiate which was Active Voice and which was Passive Voice.

However, Ms. Ria could control the class well. She had a close relation with her students. Sometimes, she chatted with them, sat with them, even made a joke with them. I wondered that this kind of relationship was a necessary or not in the middle of teaching learning process.

Somehow, she talked sharply and asked them to shut up. Then, they did. Well, she could manage the class, I think! J

- Language competence

She was rare to speak English in class. I noted that she only said some and same phrase from the beginning until the end of the class, for instance, “Any question?”, “Okey,..”, “Do you understand?”, “Good!”. That’s all.

To explain the materials, she spoke Indonesian all the time.

· Basic Teaching Skills

- Set induction

Good. She opened it with “Good morning!”, then asked one of the students to clean the blackboard, and called their name one by one.

- Set closure

There was no review about the materials that had just discussed that day.

- Delivery & stimulus Skills

Good and warm eye contact.

Firm and Assertive.

Using conventional media only (blackboard, textbook, LKS)

Using no teaching method of pair work, group discussion, or presentation, but using teacher-centered method.

- Questioning & reinforcement skills

Fair in question distribution.

Positive reinforcement, such as “Good!” and applause.

3. Material used

Ms. Ria didn’t use any media like, handouts, other learning sources like from other text books, or digital media. She only used LKS, textbooks and blackboard.

Even in the second session when she had to explain about News Item, she didn’t bring anything to show to the class, what was the example of News in the newspaper.

4. Teaching process

If I may say, it was a mix. Sometimes it ran well, sometimes not. I mean, everything like turn to a mess. It was so unpredictable.

In the first session, they learned about How to Change Passive Voice into Active Voice. However, the students seemed didn’t understand about it.

Ms. Ria’s method in teaching structure wasn’t work well, I think. The students tended to cheat by looking up the answers in the LKS or in the text book without knowing the process why Passive Voice can be changer into Active Voice and vice versa.

She also didn’t check the students’ understanding. She only gave two examples: (1) The house was repaired by a carpenter. and (2)The house has been sold by father.

She also didn’t explain why in changing passive to active we had to look up to the tenses. It was quite difficult for the students to adjust their thoughts after taking the example no.1 and example no.2.

In addition, Ms. Ria emphasized that the students had to remember the formula, like S+V2 for Past Tense or S+has/have+V3 for Present Perfect. I think it’s a bit out of the track because I think they HAVE to understand the concept first, and then they CAN remember the pattern, and not the other way around.

In the second session, after the break I mean, they learned about News Item, including newsworthy events, background events, and sources. I wondered that Miss Ria didn’t take Mass Media Communication with Mr. Heru when she was in PBI for she seemed not quite sure about what she was talking about.

The students felt difficult to define what News Items were because Ms. Ria didn’t bring the real examples of the News itself. Why she didn’t bring a piece of paper, I asked to myself. It would be easier to explain what was meant by newsworthy events, background events, and sources. I knew that she’d already mentioned the example of the death of Sopan Sopiaan, but it was like abstract thing to them. It was ridiculous to teach something that they even couldn’t grab with their vision and senses! J

In this session, most of them were falling asleep and bored with the materials.

Suddenly, 5 minutes before the bell rang; there was a knock on the door.

One head appeared, then one again, one again, one again, until TEN!!

My mouth was opened wide.

So, this was the answer of my previous question.

Ten boys were standing up like in a movie queue waiting for the entrance ticket J

Sadly, the bell rang, and I had to go.

DAY 2

I was back again!

Jumped from the bus, a bit late, 5 minutes late, stopped in the SMU GAMA gate, smiled to the security officer and ran to the second floor. My friend was waiting for me.

That morning I was only with Bety. Varo cancelled her day, I think.

It was more cheerful than yesterday!

The class were full, and they seemed like to be happy!

Oops, wait a minute!

It was Grade XI class IPS 1. Bety said it was very noisy and uncontrollable class. Huh?

I sat in the back row and took my book and began to write:

1. Students’ characteristics:

· Noisy

· Naughty

· Chaos and crowded, like a market J

· Apathy (lack of concern and interest)

· I assumed, they came from various family background

· All the boys were “big mouth”, they liked to shout and yell

· Some girls were sissy and talkative, precisely, very talkative

Same with yesterday, actually, but I would add more, like:

· There was a boy in front of me reading a comic book, a porn comic book.

· There were 2 boys in front listening to their MP3 with their headset. I think they enjoyed the songs for they hummed and shook their head continuously.

· There were two couples in this class, one in the back and one in the corner front, and they were mating, no no, I mean, they behaved like it was Saturday night in the Cineplex 21 – holding hands, hugging, and sleeping in the other’s arm.

· Some girls were putting a big lollipop in their mouth.

· Some of them were busy with their cell phone.

· 2 boys in the front drawing a sketch.

· 2 boys in the other front holding a digital camera and began to take a picture of this class, including Bety, and me and even made a recording/video.

2. Teacher’s competence

- Material mastery

Ms. Tri was not too good. She told the students about Speaking: Expressing Embarrassment, Expressing Anger and Calming Someone Down. But trust me, it was not speaking class, totally!

- Classroom management

The situation was out of her control. Ms. Tri had to speak louder and louder, but the students ignored her. She depressed. And I knew it from her face. She always complained, like “Kenapa sih, kalian kok susah diatur?” or something like that. I knew that she cannot handle that class. Hmm…

- Language competence

She never spoke English in class, only to repeat the words and sentences that she wrote in the blackboard. She even couldn’t pronounce well, for example /insulted/ she pronounces as the way it was, not /insalted/, then /fed up/ she said /fit up/. To explain the materials, she spoke Indonesian all the time.

· Basic Teaching Skills

- Set induction

Well. She opened it with “Assalamu’alaikum wr.wb.” then asked one of the students to clean the blackboard, and called their name one by one. Finally, she wrote the material in the blackboard and asked the students to copy it.

- Set closure

There was no review about the materials that had just discussed that day.

- Delivery & Stimulus Skills

Always complained about the students.

Depressed.

Using conventional media only (blackboard, textbook, LKS)

Using no teaching method of pair work, group discussion, or presentation, but using teacher-centered method.

- Questioning & reinforcement skills

No question answer session.

No positive reinforcement, only negative reinforcement like, “Kamu nakal banget sih!” or “Kamu kok rebut terus sih?”

3. Material used

Ms. Tri didn’t use any media like, handouts, other learning sources like from other text books, or digital media. She only used LKS, textbooks and blackboard. I think she was too much using the blackboard! She even wrote ALL the materials in it!!

4. Teaching process

If I may say, this class was a mess J

Ms.Tri lost herself among the students. She couldn’t control both herself and her class. That day was supposed to be a Speaking class, but what happened was really out f her control. The way she complained the students all the time bothered me, actually.

She reminded me as my high school teacher. Taking a note all the time, doing the LKS, and going home. That’s all. I got nothing.

Honestly, I feel pity if I recall that moment. I really do not want my students to be ignorant and feel apathy.

Something has to be changed.

And I think, it is my turn.

PERSONAL REFLECTION TOWARD THE OBSERVATIONS:

1. Does my opinion on “an Ideal Teacher” have changed after doing observations?

I don’t think so.

I still believe that an Ideal Teacher should not think about him/herself. He/she has to serve the students until in a point, a teacher should quit and let the students think and make their own way.

Like what Nikolaus Kazatchnakis said, “A good teacher is someone who makes a bridge for his students. After the bridge is done, he invites all the students to across it and encourage the students to make their own bridge.”

2. What will I do t improve my teaching skills?

Of course, I want to increase myself first. I have to enrich myself with knowledge.

Then, I have to find a new method on teaching.

I inspired from Hillary Swank’s story in Freedom Writers. I think it will be helpful to have a distinct method to teach in a “particular” school, like SMA GAMA for instance – a school that has so many problems deals with the students.

And last, keep practicing!

Keep thinking a lot and acting a lot!!

welcome back again in this space!!

i finally had my final exam!

so, at least i had a good day,
a good mood, and
a good feedback…

i came on time that day,
i worn a good shirt…
and i was ready to battle!

then time for feedback:

ms.Tri said that it would be better for me to ask the student to make their own recipe for they are from vocational school in the department of food and culinary…it will help them to be more creative…

and i know that in listening class, teacher should not give  much explanation, but it would be better we give them a lot of exercise in listening,,to make them accustomed to the sound and saying and speech in english…

so i thought that i was too much talking…

but anyway, i’m satisfied with the result!

so i have to go now!

i want to meet my friend who has the same location of SMU for observation task tomorrow!

last 2 weeks i was told to be a teacher in vocational school teaching listening i the topic of procedure. it was for final exam in microteaching class…

at first i was confused, for i didn’t know how to do…

so i tried to gather source but i faced many difficulties:

1) i don’t have any recording stuff (like MP4, tape recorder, mike, or anything like that)

2) i know little about sound recording (it’s a shame…)

3) my turn was getting closer and closer and you know that i dont know anything about listening…a bit afraid to operate the machine….listening skill has “a little bit” work….

4) i asked my friends but they also couldnt help me to find the materials

5) so what i had supposed to do then?

then in the D-day, i know that i will be good…

i had a good friend of mine who helped me to make sound recording…we worked on it until midnight…i even didn’t attend play performance exercise with my group…(and they were very angry!!!)

and i already made the materials…

so hope for the best for next week performance!!

in this meeting, i became student of senior high school…

i didn’t remember who was the student teacher, but then i still remember the topic we discussed….

it’s about giving opinion…

at that time, we’re supposed to give our opinion about something, like “human have to eat meat” or “having sex before married is prohibited”… something like that…

it was very fun!

you know, i like to talk, and at that time my group presented our opinion in front of class…

my favourite technique is role-play.

i dont know why, when i become a student, i like to do the role play thing!

so, how about you?

but i couldn’t write a reflection for i didn’t attend micro-teaching class…

at that time i was sick, and i had to stay in bed…

i thought that was because i was too busy to prepare Play Performance class (remember, i’m the director )

so,

once again, i’m sorry…

at first, i would like to apologize for i wrote this reflection #10-#13 in one time. it is because i’ve been busy with the preparation of Play Performance class. there’s a lot of things to do, there’s a lot of problems and conflicts and tense and tears…if i may say…

anyway, let’s talk about microteaching…

in this week, we’re supposed to teach (again!) in front of class
now it’s time to teach senior high school students…

but before that, we also had feedback from ms. Tri about our performances…

once i remember that there was one of my friend (i forgot the name ) still used game for senior high school… oh ya, it’s Tari…

at that time we had to play ball in the class in a big circle…

i think it was good, but i dont think it’s appropriate for senior high school students…maybe for junior high school it would be more suitable…

but then i reflected again to myself…

i like to play games actually, but what kind of game that i like to play?

i wondered.

maybe if i am student in junior high school i like to play game with a partner or a group of three, rather than a big group…

then how about in senior high school?

i remembered that i didnt like to play game at all…

what i like was a group discussion….

so, what game do you like then?

I had first chance to deliver the material…

It was good, you know…

My voice was loud and clear, I also tried to choose the simple diction for they are still in 2^nd semester…

The problem happened when the game started…

Students in a group of four were required to present and describe “interesting object” in front of class… FYI, me and Uuth had the topic of “Describing Things”, so we chose “interesting Objects” to be our main interest…

Back to the presentation, the class was a bit in chaos, my friend Uuth seemed difficult to manage the class for it’s her turn to teach in front of class… (I stopped when the students were discussing – before presenting their objects, of course)

However, in my opinion, our class at that time was successful!!

The students were active (too active, in fact) and we’re having fun!

The class enjoyed our teaching!

Nevertheless, Sr. Rachel gave us different feedbacks:

· I had grammatical errors in some of my saying, such as I was wrong to say the part of speech of the word “cylinder”. I should say “cylindrical” for the adjective form instead I said “cylinder shape” J it’s embarrassing you know… I was so shy…

· Sr. Rachel criticized my option to use “tampon” as an interesting object for a model to be taught in the first session. She said it’s not wise to use such an object… I defended my ideas to her and I said my reason why… at that time, I said that “tampon” is very unusual object in Indonesia, that’s why I’d like to introduce it in the class… I still keep what Mr. Ouda’s said to me about learning foreign language… he said that it would be better if we also learn about the culture of the foreign language itself so we can remember best of the language itself… so I tried to introduce them something new, something that they really do not know… coz to be honest, when I, myself, was introduced firstly with “tampon”, I think that was very interesting, how could such a small cylindrical cotton can absorb bloods. Compare to Indonesian “feminine napkins” it is very unusual and strange. I just want to say to them that “Hey, look! There are a lot of women in the other side of the world with the same age of you, who use another kind of feminine napkins, and they call it “tampon”, and it exists!”

· I think I can accept Sr. Rachel’s objection, it is probably because she comes from “the other side of the world whose the women use tampon when they have their menstruation period”, and I think she should be more open with the culture itself, coz I just want to let them know something new that exists, so they will know “tampon” if they meet European women or American women in their life…

I think, even “tampon” is a small thing, it can be used as an object of material to teach…

Anyway, I was happy with the result despite of the Sr. Rachel’s mark on the sealed envelope!

The day before my practice, I collected pictures from magazines. I tried to search the interesting pictures to attract attention and draw curiosity. After collecting them, I cut them and put them into a big plastic. Then I had an idea… why didn’t I make up a special character? I think it’s interesting to have one coz I’ve never seen it before…

I took my pencil and began to draw a character named Sheila. She’s young and pretty. I pictured her as she was writing on her diary about her house and surroundings… I drew some characters of her and positioned them in a comic-strip-like drawing…

I was very exciting at that time to teach in front of class that I forgot to count the time… I think my materials are enough for 30 minutes teaching… but in fact, I was failed to keep in time…

That morning, my first phase was successful… I could direct the class to guess the pictures given using correct prepositions, but as the time went by, I felt difficult to manage my time since there were, IN FACT, still many materials that I couldn’t convey to the class yet…

I was a bit disappointed coz I’d already have a big picture of how my class will go, so when it’s out of my plan, I was a bit sad…

Anyway, I also had some feedback from the observers and Ms. Tri herself…

One of the observer (Heribertus Martinus Moscati) said in his observation sheet that I didn’t give both written and spoken review, but in fact, I DID… the other observers didn’t say about that…maybe Heribertus didn’t notice me J

The feedbacks from Ms. Tri were:

· I used “Good morning” to close the class, in fact it should be ONLY for induction

· I did unnecessary movement a lot, such as running across the class too often and grinning and smiling without any reason… Ms. Tri said that those activities I did can affect my performance during teaching, so I should be professional and mature, for she’s afraid that there would be an opinion saying that I’m too young to be a teacher…

· Last, is about my hair… To be honest, that was really my bad hair day! J I’d hadn’t take shampoo for about week (I was so busy, I think, so I forgot to shampoo my hair) my hair was so oily and had to be tied…so later I keep in my mind for I only have short and little hair so I shouldn’t tie my hair in class while teaching .

after Easter holiday i believe our brain is still frozen to think
last Friday, there were five people presented in front of class and actually they were good!
i’m a bit nervous for next Friday is my turn…
anyway, i learned that each member of the group has to be connected each other, since they are in one topic.
so, i now focus on collecting the materials, and formulate the teaching srategies what would i teach for tomorrow…

first, preparation is half of success
second, voice!
third, material given
fourth, appearance
five, CONTENT!!
